A German BF 109 falls in flames over England’s south coast before the guns of Pilot Officer Bob Doe’s Mark I Supermarine Spitfire, late August, 1940. Simon Atack’s illustration of this early World War II air action offers an insightful glimpse into the frenetic and deadly aerial ballet that was the Battle of Britain. Bob Doe was one of very few airmen who piloted both Hurricane and Spitfire fighters as England battled desperately to stem the Nazi onslaught. Doe survived the war, and was credited with 15 victories air-to-air. He was also awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Distinguished Service Order for his accomplishments.Print is signed by Bob Doe and the artist. #176 in an edition of 500 worldwide.
