First founded in 1958, Cosworth has designed and manufactured racing engines for a virtual who’s who of Formula One, Indy, and sports car champions. Ford has partnered with Cosworth nearly from the beginning, and together the firms have produced engines such as the DFV, which won 167 races in two decades of serious competition. One of Cosworth’s most successful and long-lived development programs has been with CART/ Champ Car, which effectively put an end to previous series domination by Offenhauser. In 1992 Cosworth introduced the now legendary series of XB engines, which won 6 Indy car races in its inaugural season. Incidentally, 7-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher celebrated his first F1 victory ever in 1992 driving a Cosworth powered Benneton-Ford. Other racing notables who utilized the XB included Mario and Michael Andretti, Scott Goodyear, Nigel Mansell, and Eddie Cheever.
