In 1967, sports car enthusiasts welcomed the introduction of Italian manufacturer DeTomaso’s ‘Mangusta’, or ‘Mongoose’ in English; a Giugiaro-designed supercar powered initially by a Ford 289 cu. in. engine. Only 401 examples were built featuring 4 wheel disc brakes, a five speed ZF transaxle, unique ‘gull-wing’ doors over the engine and luggage compartments, and a claimed top speed of 155 mph. Although its handling characteristics were suspect, the Mangusta has generated an enthusiastic following worldwide, and is highly sought after by collectors. Piko, a company from the former East Germany, is perhaps best known for its model train construction, which continues to the present. Their 1:12 scale Mangusta is a battery powered, cable steered toy car which features opening doors and front boot, engine detail, operating lights (not confirmed due to odd European battery size) and three push buttons on the battery/steering box.
