‘Monaco’; a name that carries immense significance in the world of Grand Prix racing. The twisting, seaside circuit is not only known by the glitterati it attracts every year, but also by the heroic triumphs and impactful tragedies associated with the ninety year old race. Artist Alan Fearnley illustrates a slice of this history with a quiet, reflective moment prior to the running of the 1957 event, held on the 19th of May. Four of the world’s greatest drivers are gathered in the Ferrari pits; Juan Manuel Fangio (Maserati), Mike Hawthorne (Ferrari), Wolfgang Von Trips (Ferrari) and Sterling Moss (Vanwall) enjoy a convivial chat after exercising their cars during practice. Mechanics also discuss the day’s events and tinker unhurriedly with Von Trips’ Ferrari 801. Fearnley delivers an insightful glimpse into an idyllic time when drivers were ‘gentlemen’, and racing cars weren’t run by computers.
