“Richtofen’s Flying Circus”, by Nicolas

Trudgian (1998)

March 18, 1918, Cambrai, France; the German army is preparing for one of the largest and most desperate offensives of World War I. Aware that the recent entry of the United States into the war could spell defeat, Germany hopes it can smash through British and French forces before Americans arrive in significant numbers. The British launch a pre-emptive air strike, and the Germans respond in kind, initiating one of the largest air battles of the war. Here, Trudgian depicts both British and German aircraft in action over the devastated front lines. Pictured are Fokker DR-1 triplanes and Albatros DV fighters of Manfred von Richtofen’s (the infamous Red Baron) Jagdgruppe 1, and Sopwith Camels along with a Bristol fighter. British tanks rumble toward German emplacements through the distant misty fields. This is one of the few large size prints available that illustrate First World War aerial action. Framed in mahogany with anti-reflective glass. #7 in an Artist’s Proof Edition of only 60 worldwide. Frame size: 42 ¾ x 26 inches. Print size: 34 ¾ x 18 inches. Signed by the artist.
